I Love Japan - Our Japan Tshirt
28/05/2007 17:57:27
Some people ask if this says something rude in japanese but it honestly says "I Love Japan"!! Maybe we should make a design that does say something rude and you can wear it whilst pretending you don't realise............................. or maybe not! What do you think of our Japan tshirt?

Why is one of the lines on the second character a darker black than the rest of the lettering?

That was just a problem with the image. It should be fixed now. The black on the t-shirt is completely consistent. Thanks for letting us know about the problem though!

Hi - I am Japanese, and I just saw this Tshirt.

I'm afraid to say this Tshirt's message is kinda strange...
in Japanese grammer, we say "We JAPAN love".
(Watashi wa Nihonga Daisukidesu)

If you wear it in Japan, most people would think it's strange =/

kimura-san,
i asked my japanese teacher (sheffield daigaku de benkyoushiteimasu) about this as i also thought it was the wrong style of grammar;
however, after seeing japanese versions of I Love NY shirts like "Watashi wa Daisuki NY", it only seemed fitting that the shirt design is like this! plus it keeps the similar style of the english language shirts that are popular at the moment.

(also, to criticise our grammar after we've seen so many of your Engrish shirts is simply a case of "pot kettle black!" :D.)

If you really aware many strange English T-shirts exist, you will not produce this wrong Japanese T-shirts :-)

Hi there,

Thanks for your interest and for the comments on the design. We spoke to Joe-san about the design when we were working on it and we knew that we had to strike a balance between ensuring that the design was similar to the "I Love NY" design and ensuring that it was readable from a Japanese point of view. We knew it wouldn't be perfect but we love it and it's one of our best sellers!

Like Joe-san says, it's very similar to the japanese versions of the "I Love NY" t-shirts so you better tell them too!!

If you want this T-shirt to mimic the famous
I♥
NY

maybe

?♥
??

is what you're after.

Like a play on words...but can be understood as "I Love Japan".

Just a suggestion.
Posted by Tokyo Five, 13/04/2010 16:22:40
The kanji I wrote in my post above doesn't show up.

My suggestion was

"Ai" ('love' kanji) ♥
"Nihon" ('Japan' kanji)

I hope you understand what I mean.
